An Au Pair is basically a young girl or boy living in a foreign
country with a host family.
Au Pairs are partly responsible for childcare and light household work
within the home and receive a monthly monetary allowance for their personal
upkeep.
Potential Au Pairs must:
The duties of an Au Pair consist of helping out with light housework and
looking after the children for a total of max. 30 hours per week. The share
of housework does not exceed 20 % of total working hours.
The Au Pair is supposed to look after the children of the host family in a
responsible and loving way, play with them, take and pick the children from
school, help with home work, take
them to after school activities, accompany them on extra curricular
activities, and also to engage the children in stimulating and constructive
activities.
Light housework would include, for example,
preparing light meals, cleaning, vacuuming, ironing, and babysitting.
The Au Pair will receive free board and share all meals with the host family. The Au Pair is entitled to his/her own room within the house or flat of the host family. The room is private and adequately furnished.
The Au Pair has the opportunity to attend a language course. The costs for the language course are usually incurred by the Au Pair. Under certain circumstances, the host family may be willing to contribute to the costs of the course. The host family will however bear the travel costs to the next suitable language course for the Au Pair.
At present, an Au Pair receives a monthly allowance of 260 Euros. On arrival in Germany, the Au Pair should set up a personal account into which the host family can deposit the pocket money.
The Au Pair is during his/her stay ensured against illness and accidents by the host family.
The Au Pair is also entitled to a total of 4 weeks paid holiday for the one year stay with the host family.
